Vincenzo Maurino

Vincenzo Maurino gained his medical degree in Italy from the University of Naples “Federico II”, achieving honours in 1990. He specialised in Ophthalmology in 1994 in the same University. In the same year he won a scholarship to further his ophthalmic training at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and was appointed Fellow in Strabismus and Paediatric Ophthalmology. After perfecting his general ophthalmic training at Moorfields he undertook in the same Institution a two-year fellowship in Corneal Transplant Surgery and Refractive Laser Vision Correction Surgery. He also successfully completed fellowships in Advanced Cataract Surgery and Glaucoma. He was appointed Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in 2002. From 2013 he is also the Director of the Cataract Service at Moorfields Eye Hospital. He has published several scientific papers in peer reviewed ophthalmic journals and presented at national and international meetings. His research interest at Moorfields are primarily looking at outcomes of cataract surgery and toric-multifocal IOL surgery. He also has a strong research interest in Femtosecond Laser Assisted surgery within corneal and cataract. He lectures nationally and internationally and has been an invited speaker on topics such as Corneal Surgery, Refractive Surgery and Cataract Surgery at several international scientific conferences worldwide. He is a Surgical Trainer at Moorfields where he teaches and supervises the training of surgeons in microsurgery techniques and technologies such as modern corneal transplant, laser refractive surgery and cataract surgery. He is a member of several international ophthalmic societies such as The Royal College of Ophthalmology (RCOphth), The European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgery (ESCRS), the American Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), to name a few. He is strongly associated to his home country Italy and has served as Scientific Advisor to the Italian Society of Ophthalmology (SOI) since 2006, seats on the Board of the Italian Society of Corneal transplant and Ocular Surface (SICCSO) since 2009. Since 2010 he has been appointed as Visiting Professor for Corneal Diseases at University of Rome, Tor Vergata.  In 2009 he was honoured to receive the prize “Napoletani Eccellenti nel Mondo” from the then Italian Prime minister and more recently in 2016 he has been made by the President of the Italian Republic “Ufficiale dell’ Ordine di Merito della Stella d’Italia” given his contribution to the excellency of the Italian medicine in UK. Vincenzo Maurino is also involved in  supporting charity work to help developing countries to achieve the same level of health care enjoyed in the West and has done charitable work in China with the local charity Lifeline Express.
