Professor Marchini was born in Chiari (Brescia-Italy) on the 7th March 1955.

Once completed the secondary school, focusing on humanities, he obtained the Medical Degree at the University of Padua (1980) and the Specialization in Ophthalmology at the University of Verona (1984), both “magna cum laude”. He carried his career at the Eye Clinic of the University of Verona, directed by Prof. Luciano Bonomi. He started as observer and than as honorary clinical assistant, clinical fellow, consultant and associate professor. He completed his training having scholarships abroad, particularly in Suisse (Eye clinic of the Universities of Berne and Lausanne), Great Britain (Sheffield Ophthalmology Department) and Germany (Eye Clinic of the Freie Universität, Berlin).

From 2002 he is Full Professor and Director of the Ophthalmology Section of the Department of Neurosciences, Biomedicine and Movement at the University of Verona. In the same year he became Clinical Chief of the Eye Clinic at the hospital of Verona (AOUI).  From 2005 he is Director of the Residency Training Programme in Ophthalmology at the same University.

Assistance.

He his Clinical Chief and Coordinator of the Eye Clinic of Verona. This comprises 3 researchers, 10 consultants, 3 research fellows and 21 residents. The clinical activity consists of 5.200 surgical procedures per year (more than 7.000 considering the intravitreal injections) and more than 100.000 outpatient clinic procedures per year as secondary/tertiary centre.

Surgical Experience.

At present Prof. Marchini has performed more than 20.000 surgical procedures. These include the standardized surgery of cataract and glaucoma, the non perforating trabecular surgery, canaloplasty, glaucoma valve implant, congenital glaucoma surgery, the latest techniques of lamellar corneal transplantation and endo-keratoplasty, corneal limbal stem cell implant in ocular surface diseases and conservative surgery of uveal melanoma.

Teaching and Training Activity.

Prof. Marchini is the lead teacher of  “Diseases of the Visual System” and “Ophthalmology” in both the faculties of “Medicine and Surgery” and  “Dentistry” at the University of Verona. Furthermore, he is Director of the Residency Training Programme in Ophthalmology and of the Ophthalmology teaching for the Residency Training Programme in Neurology, Neurosurgery and Plastic Surgery. From 2012 he is lecturer at the European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology (ESASO) of the Suisse University.

He has organized several medical education events in Ophthalmology and advanced courses. The latter were aimed at the learning and development of innovative techniques in the corneal and glaucoma surgery.

Research/Scientific Activity.

Prof. Marchini’s scientific activity refers to the field of glaucoma, ultrasound bio-microscopy, anterior segment surgery, corneal transplantation and stem cells implant and ocular oncology. He is author of 324 original scientific articles, 33 book and monograph chapters in ophthalmology and 2 educational manuals. He took part as speaker, invited speaker or teacher in 476 national and international scientific meetings, congresses, seminars and update courses.

He was principal investigator and coordinator in the Egna-Neumarkt glaucoma epidemiological study in the 90’s. Nonetheless, he organized the international meeting “Il glaucoma all’inizio del terzo millennio” and the First Joint AISG-SIGLA meeting, both set in Verona, in 2002 and 2015 respectively.

He organized, directed and coordinated research groups for 17 different multicentric trials in the fields of pharmacology and ophthalmic surgery. From 1993 he is the supervisor of the clinical research for the stereotactic radiosurgery with Gamma Knife in the therapy of Ocular Tumors. From 2005 he started the clinical research on the role of stem cells in the corneal and ocular surface diseases, achieving a competitive grant in the 2008.

Membership.

Prof. Marchini is an invited member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. He has been member of the Research Committee of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) from 2002 to 2005, member of the Scientific Committee of the International Leksell Gamma Knife Society (LGKS) in the 2005-2006, member of the Board of the Italian Society of Corneal Transplants (SITRAC) from 2006 to 2009 and of the Board of the Italian Association for the Study of Glaucoma (AISG) from 2010 to 2016.

From 2008 he is member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Society of Ophthalmology (SOI), who awarded him with the prestigious Mario Zingirian SOI Medal Lecture 2014 for clinical and scientific deserves. Currently he is member of the Board of the Italian Society of Stem Cells and Ocular Surface Diseases (SICSSO).

He is member of six international and eight national scientific societies, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Furthermore he is a Scientific Reviewer of 5 impacted peer reviewed international journals and member of the editorial board of two national journals.
