Food and
Wine

Tuscan Maremma offers an extremely interesting, simple, and frugal cuisine that embraces both land and sea products. It's an authentic gastronomy made of aromas and flavors that evoke the past and ancient history of this land. Skilled hands can transform fish into tasty fried dishes, game into succulent roasts, milk into flavorful cheeses, pork into hams and salamis, the abundant grapes along the sunny hills into fresh and robust wine, and the green and black olives into precious, high-quality extra virgin olive oil. Indeed, olive oil and wine have always been the two true strengths of Tuscan Maremma, destined to make the gastronomic experience of this region unforgettable.

Maremma is the ideal place for wine lovers. Whether you are enthusiasts, connoisseurs, or simply curious, in our region, you can delight your palate with excellent products in unique locations, immersed in picturesque landscapes.

Montalcino and Val d’Orcia

Montalcino is a must-visit destination for those exploring the Val d’Orcia! This is the homeland of the famous Brunello di Montalcino wine, one of the most renowned and recognized wines in the world. South of Mount Amiata, vast vineyards stretch as far as the eye can see, surrounding the enchanting medieval village, embraced by an ancient castle and a grand, imposing city wall.

As you traverse the vineyards leading to the charming village, your attention will immediately be captivated by the mighty fortress, a pentagonal-shaped castle that hosts important events such as the Jazz & Wine Festival in summer.

Colle Massari

Colle Massari estate is located at the foot of Mount Amiata, at an elevation of 320 meters above sea level, in the Montecucco DOC. The company was founded in 1998 and in 2014 was named the Winery of the Year by the prestigious Gambero Rosso guide. The estate covers an area of 1210 hectares, including olive groves, vineyards, and wooded land. The unique vertical structure of the winery ensures that the handling of grapes and must occurs solely by gravity, without the use of mechanical means.

Rocca di Frassinello

Located on one of the highest hills in Gavorrano, Rocca di Frassinello dominates the surrounding vineyard landscape. The colors of the vineyards give wine lovers a taste of an authentic and renowned Tuscany.
Wine enthusiasts will be thrilled to explore the rich variety of wines produced by the winery. Among the famous Italian grape varieties cultivated, Sangioveto and Vermentino stand out, alongside particularly unique and well-known French grape varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Shiraz. For lovers of artistic and architectural forms, it will be a pleasure to admire the creation of Renzo Piano, a point of excellence among Italian architects. The concept behind the winery is that of a true monumental work of art, but its true attraction is the central hall, the beating heart of wine production, where the barrels containing the wine are stored. Named “La Barricaia,” this underground room is covered by a large ceiling that stands without the support of any columns. Its descending steps resemble a beautiful auditorium or the ancient amphitheaters of classical tradition, embracing the tables that can be set up for a truly unique tasting experience. Another special feature is the interior frame of the room, which allows curious visitors to observe all the phases and functions of the winery’s production cycle.

Le Mortelle

The estate “Le Mortelle”, owned by the Marquises Antinori, is located in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, just a few kilometers from Castiglione della Pescaia, in an extraordinary and captivating location, both for the surrounding nature and the history of the area.

The underground cellar inside the hill embraced by the vineyards is in perfect harmony with the surrounding countryside. The cylindrical underground structure is mostly buried to minimize its environmental impact and has been built using natural materials, harnessing the temperature regulation of the rocks deep in the ground. It is arranged on three levels, facilitating the grape dropping process, ensuring higher quality and energy efficiency.
